Our beloved mother Katherine (Kay) Bagiatis Jamis passed peacefully on Monday, January 10, 2022.
Born the child of Greek immigrant parents Nicholas and Marie Bagiatis on May 1, 1929, Katherine grew up in Stockdale, PA, graduated from Charleroi High School, and attended Douglas Business School. She married Michael John Jamis in June 1954, eventually settling in Ambridge, where they raised three daughters.
Katherine was a devoted member of the Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church of Ambridge, Ladies Philoptochos, and proudly served on the church building committee. She represents a lineage of first generation born Greek Americans who celebrated their heritage, proudly passed on their love of faith and culture to their children, labored over Nationality Days, sent their children to Greek school, learned to dance the syrtaki in their living rooms, baked baklava, spanakopita, and pastichio in their kitchens, and taught us all the meaning and value of parea— friends who regularly gather to share their experiences about life, their philosophies, values and ideas.
We have been blessed in life with the gift of our mother. Her kindness, selflessness, and unconditional love was abundant to all who knew her. She will be remembered for her sparkling blue eyes, bright smile, sweet laughter, and the love she gave to her children, grandchildren, great grandchildren, brother and sister-in-law, nieces and nephews, and the many people whose lives she touched over nine decades.
Katherine is survived by her daughters Joanne Jamis Cain (husband Jim Cain, grandchildren Michelene, John, Jessica and great grandchildren Gavin and Penelope Katherine), Mary Jamis (wife Starr Johnson, grandchildren Julia and Michael), Cally Jamis Vennare (husband Raymond Vennare), brother Steve Bagiatis (wife Kassandra Bagiatis), nephews and nieces and numerous cousins and their families.
Friends will be received on Thursday from 2-4 and 6-8 PM at the John Syka Funeral Home, Inc. 833 Kennedy Drive, Ambridge where a Trisagion service will be held at 7:00 PM. Additional visitation will take place on Friday from 10 AM until time of funeral service at 11 AM in the Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church, 2930 Beaver Road, Ambridge. Father Anastasios Athanasiou will preside. Interment will follow at Economy Cemetery. For the safety of the family and the elderly and to protect the public health of this community, masks are mandatory at the funeral home and the church.
Heartfelt thanks to Gallagher Home Care and Hospice Services for their compassionate care of our mother at the end of her life. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions are suggested to Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church, Ambridge, PA 15003.
