Gus P. Mathews, 93 of Baden, passed away peacefully Monday, February 26, 2018 in his home surrounded by his loving family.
Born March 3, 1924, in Freedom to the late Peter and Anastasia Matheos, he was a graduate of Freedom High School. He proudly served his country in the United States Navy during World War II. Upon serving 2 years aboard the USS Boston in the Asiatic Pacific Theatre his ship was one of the first to arrive on the Island of Japan after the Nagasaki bombing. He attended Geneva College after the war and then began his career at Westinghouse Electric retiring in supervision after 35 years of service. He most enjoyed spending time with his family and working in his garden. He was a member of Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church, Ambridge. A loyal season ticket holder for many years, he never missed a Steeler game. Preceding him in death in addition to his parents were two sisters, Aris Earhardt and Evelyn Turney. Left to reflect on their life together is his loving wife of 65 years, Dorothy (Cavoulas) Mathews. He leaves behind three children, Gus P. (Kathy) Mathews, Jr. of Murrysville, Denise Mathews of FL., Jeffrey Mathews of NC and 2 granddaughters who were the light of his life, Dana Mathews of New York City and Alisa Mathews of Greentree.
Friends will be received Thursday from 6-8 P.M. in the John Syka Funeral Home, Inc., 833 Kennedy Drive, Ambridge, where a Trisagion service will be conducted at 7:30 P.M. Additional visitation will take place on Friday from 10:30 A.M. until time of funeral services at Noon in the Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church 2930 Beaver Road, Ambridge. Father Emmanuel N. Lillios, Polycarp Rameas, and Father Demetrios Carellas will officiate. Interment with full military honors will follow in the National Cemetery of the Alleghenies. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions are suggested to Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church.
