Elizabeth Back

Elizabeth "Betty" Back, formerly of Hopewell Township, passed away Saturday May 19, 2018, in St. Barnabas Nursing Home, Gibsonia.  She was born April 19, 1934, in Sewickley, PA and was the devoted daughter of the late Walter and Olga Nadzak. Betty was the beloved wife of 61 years to the late Andrew Back who died January 19, 2018.  

Betty and Andy were avid golfers and animal lovers. They enjoyed showing their beautiful Weimaraners at dog shows across the east coast. Betty had been an outstanding executive secretary for many years at the Ambridge and Pittsburgh offices of the American Bridge Division of United States Steel Corporation. She was active throughout her life in civic affairs, serving as an officer of the Hopewell Women's Civic Club, the Anthony Wayne Historical Society of Beaver County, and the Beaver County Unit of the American Cancer Society.  She was a longtime member of SS Peter and Paul Ukrainian Catholic Church, Ambridge.  

Surviving are a sister Sandra Nadzak Shaffer of Malvern, PA;brother and sister-in-law Walter Nadzak, Jr. and Shirley Nadzak of South Carolina; sisters-in-law Virginia Thompson of Ohio, and Dolores Rusenko of Ambridge. 

Betty and Andy were especially kind and loving to all of their nieces and nephews and their families: Karen Shaffer Hampton and Curtis Shaffer both of Malvern, PA, Traci Thompson  of Ohio,  Mary Ann Melnyk of Ambridge,  Brian Thompson of Philadelphia,  David Thompson of Mars, PA,  Annie Rusenko of Ambridge,  Jay Rusenko of Maryland,  Cary Nadzak of South Carolina,  Tracy Nadzak Vayo of Utah,  Jeff Nadzak of South Carolina, and Walter Nadzak III  of Colorado. 

Betty and Andy will be greatly missed and always remembered for their wonderful warm smiles, their sense of humor, and the love, happiness, and kindness they brought to friends, neighbors, and especially family. Friends will be received Friday May 25, 2018 from 10:00 A.M. until time of Panachyda services at 11:30 A.M. in the John Syka Funeral Home, 833 Kennedy Drive, Ambridge. A church service will follow at noon at SS Peter and Paul Ukrainian Catholic Church, 404 Sixth St., Ambridge. Her pastor, Father Michael Polosky, will officiate. Interment will follow at SS Peter and Paul Ukrainian Catholic Cemetery. Donations are suggested to the Alzheimer’s Association at www.alz.org.
